What is trigger finger?
It is a condition that affects the finger's movement (inability to straighten the finger after bending it). There is also snapping and clicking during the movement
How does it happen?
1. Finger flexor’s tendon glide through a tunnel called tendon sheath.
2. Trigger finger happens when the tendon that controls that finger can’t glide smoothly in the sheath that surrounds it. It may happen due to a small lump that forms on the tendon or when part of the tendon sheath becomes swollen.
Causes:
1. Direct trauma to hand.2. Repetitive finger's movement.3. Unknown reasons.
Who’s at risk:
1. Diabetic patients.2. Women > Men.3. Adults aged 50 to 60.
Symptoms:
1. Painless clicking in the finger (with movement).2. Localized pain in the palm and finger joints.3. Inability to straighten the finger after bending.4. Morning stiffness
Treatment:
First, we’ll start with stretching exercises for the wrist and fingers.
Wrist stretching exercises
You can find wrist's stretching exercises videos in treatment programs page . Do each exercise 10 reps, 5 times/day.
Fingers stretches
Put your palm down on a flat surface then pull your finger back until you feel stretch in your palm and hold (as tolerated). You can do it for the non-affected fingers as well.
