Ganglion cyst

What is ganglion cyst?
Ganglion cysts are typically round or oval lumps and are filled with a jellylike fluid.

Causes:

Who’s at risk1. Women > Men2. Previous injury to wrist & hand3. Osteoarthritis

Symptoms:

Location: It usually occurs in wrist & hand joints. It also can occur in ankles and feet.Pain:Ganglion cysts usually are painless. But if a cyst presses on a nerve, it can cause pain, tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness.Shape & size:Ganglion cysts are round or oval. The size of the cyst depends on joint movement. It gets larger over time with joint movement.

Treatment:

Ganglion cysts are often painless and don’t need treatment. However, if there was pain, tingling, numbness, and movement restrictions, then you need consultation with a hand surgeon.

Splint

It is worn to reduce the movement thus reduce the size of the ganglion cyst.It shouldn't be worn for long periods of time because it may lead to muscle weakness.

Aspiration

It is done by a hand surgeon. He/she will use a needle to withdraw the fluids from the cyst.

Surgery

It is usually performed by a Hand Surgeon. Surgery is done when the ganglion cyst is painful & affecting the movement.After the excision, the wrist may be immobilized for a while. Then, Physical Therapy is needed to regain range of motion & muscles strength.
